Approaching God

During my talk with God this morning, I was guided to the following scripture to share:

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.”

– 1 John 5: 14-15

At times during my walk of faith, I have been asked by a spiritually seeking person about the concept of “ask and you shall receive.” I believe this verse addresses the concept but not in the way many people relate to it.

What I love about the beginning of the verse is the concept of approaching God with confidence. What a wonderful blessing we have… . approaching God with confidence! We don’t have to be afraid, knowing  He wants us to draw near to Him.

The part that sometimes gets confusing is “we know that we have what we asked of him”. If not understood properly, this can lead to confusion and disappointment for a new believer.

I sometimes remind a person we are approaching God, not the wizard of God….not a God behind a curtain listening to wishes and pretending to be someone he is not.

I believe we can be confident that God will give us an answer. We know He heard us, we know He will answer us.

During my walk of faith, I have learned and trust that God does hear every whispered prayer. I have also learned that His answer may take time to unfold in my life but an answer there will be. Early on my walk of faith, it seemed easy to ask God to do this or that for me and expect it to happen. Now, I pray for God’s will in my life.

My prayer for us today is to give thanks to God for being able to approach Him with confidence and knowing with confidence, our prayers will not only be heard, but answered!

  1. Hi Rick: I’m enjoying a book now by Robert Benson, titled Living Prayer. If you haven’t read it yet, I think you’d find it interesting. Hope you have a beautiful Sabbath tomorrow.

  2. Reblogged this on Re-theologizing and commented:
God always answers prayer, in God’s time…

  3. Praise God! We can only get to know him better by spending time with him.
